The quantification of organochlorine pesticides, herbicides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) plays a significant role in assessing the impact of these compounds on the environment, including potential effects on the food chain. Concentrations of pesticides and PCBs are determined by extracting the sample and analyzing the extract using a dual column gas chromatograph (GC) with electron capture detectors (ECD).
